The dogs of Mesoamerica had a complex relationship with humans, and served important roles in everyday life.

The classic “Colima Dogs” help us to understand that story. Using the “Barro Burñido” technique handed down from pre-hispanic time, these sculptures have a sumptuous surface. The deep black color is obtained by adding mineral slips. Instead of glazing, the polished surface is achieved by rubbing the clay with a river or quartz stone to seal the pigment before firing.

Available in large and small, these playful dogs are crafted by artisans in San Bartolo Coyotepec, Oaxaca.
